Dog Photographer in Cohasset, MA
Last updated
Cohasset has the most dramatic rocky coastline of any South Shore town. Barnacled ledge, harbor islands, and tidal pools that turn dog portraits into something editorial.
I'm Chris McCarthy, a professional dog photographer based in Rockland. I've been photographing dogs at Sandy Beach and Government Island since 2014. The rock formations here produce a look you simply can't get anywhere else on the South Shore.

Where We Photograph in Cohasset
Cohasset's coastline is geologically distinct from the rest of the South Shore — granite and basalt rather than sand and dune. That difference shows in the photos.
Sandy Beach
Despite the name, Sandy Beach's most compelling feature is the intertidal rock shelf that extends 20–40 feet from the shore at low tide. The barnacle and algae patterns on the ledge create natural foreground texture that frames a dog portrait the way a white sand beach never can. The east-facing orientation means I get warm raking light across the rocks in the morning — the same light that makes Acadia portraits look so good. Best at 6:30–8am in summer, 7:30–9am in fall.
Government Island
A small harbor island accessible by causeway, with views of Minot's Ledge Lighthouse across the water. The combination of historic stone structures, harbor boats, and open Atlantic sky makes Government Island feel more like coastal Maine than South Shore Massachusetts. For clients who want a portrait that looks like it belongs in a coffee table book — this is where I take them.
Black Rock Beach
Accessed from Forest Avenue, Black Rock Beach sees far fewer visitors than Sandy Beach but offers darker, more dramatic basalt formations. The color contrast between the near-black rock and a golden-coated dog in afternoon light is striking. A good alternative for clients who want the rocky-coast aesthetic but with more privacy than Sandy Beach in peak season.
Wompatuck State Park
3,526 acres of mixed hardwood forest spanning Cohasset, Hingham, and Norwell. Wide carriage roads with long sightlines — excellent for reactive dogs who need space and early warning of approaching dogs. The park also has beaver ponds that photograph beautifully in fall when the foliage reflects in the still water. My primary Cohasset recommendation for any dog who finds the coast overwhelming.

The Rocky Coast Difference
Most South Shore dog photography looks the same: soft sand, blue-green water, golden retriever running in the surf. That's a beautiful image. But it's also one that looks like it could have been taken anywhere from Maine to the Outer Banks.
Cohasset gives me something different. When a dog is sitting on a barnacled granite ledge at Sandy Beach with the Atlantic behind them and Minot's Ledge Lighthouse on the horizon — that portrait is unmistakably here. Unmistakably Cohasset. You know exactly where it was taken, and why it couldn't have been taken anywhere else.
That's what "sense of place" means in photography. Cohasset has it in a way that's unique on the South Shore.

How It Works
We Talk
I learn about your dog and what kind of images you want. Rocky coast with editorial drama? I'll plan for Sandy Beach. Reactive dog who needs space? Wompatuck goes on the list.
Tide Timing
Cohasset rock sessions require low tide for the best ledge access. I'll coordinate a session window that puts us on the rocks during peak morning light within two hours of low tide.
Your Session
We meet at the chosen Cohasset location. Sessions run 60–90 minutes at your dog's pace. Leashes stay on and are removed in post-processing.
Photos on Your Wall
Gallery within 5–7 business days. We pick favorites together and turn them into prints and wall art that belong in your home.

Cohasset Dog Photography — FAQ
Where do you photograph dogs in Cohasset?
Sandy Beach is my most-used Cohasset location — the tidal rock formations create a foreground texture that's completely unlike sandy beaches, and the colors (barnacle white, algae green, deep granite gray) make even a black dog visually distinct. Government Island is my pick for clients who want an architectural element — the harbor views from the island with the lighthouse behind your dog creates a composition that's been a consistent gallery standout. Black Rock Beach, accessed from Forest Avenue, offers a more dramatic, isolated feel with darker rock formations and fewer visitors than Sandy.
Is Sandy Beach in Cohasset good for dog photography?
Sandy Beach is one of my personal favorites on the South Shore. The rocky intertidal zone at low tide gives us natural foreground frames — dogs sitting on barnacled ledge with the Atlantic behind them look like editorial portraits, not vacation snapshots. The beach faces east, so morning light is exceptional. Peak season I recommend arriving by 6:30am to get the rocks before other beachgoers.
How much does a dog portrait session in Cohasset cost?
Sessions start at $395. That covers your session time and a full gallery of professionally edited images. Wall art, canvas prints, and framed photos are available after your session. Every package already includes your edited high-resolution digital images to keep — no separate purchase and no sales meeting.
Can you photograph reactive dogs in Cohasset?
Yes. Wompatuck State Park (shared between Cohasset, Hingham, and Norwell) is my recommendation for reactive dogs in the Cohasset area. The 3,526-acre park has wide multi-use trails with long sightlines — you can see other dogs and horses approaching from far enough away to step off-trail. Sandy Beach can also work for reactive dogs on early weekday mornings when the beach is nearly empty.
Do you travel to Cohasset for sessions?
Yes, Cohasset is fully within my service area and I travel there at no extra charge. We can also photograph at your property if your dog is most comfortable on their own turf.

About the Author
Chris McCarthyProfessional Dog Photographer · Rockland, MA · 11+ years experience
I've photographed hundreds of dogs across the South Shore and Greater Boston since 2014 — every breed, size, age, and temperament. My own rescue, Sully, was reactive and anxious when I got him, and working with him every day taught me how to photograph dogs that other photographers find difficult. I specialize in reactive and shy dogs, seniors, and memory sessions — the sessions that matter most and need the most patience.
